Arts residency in Coyoacán, Mexico City, that offers a space for artists to develop a new piece or body of work and present it at the end of their stay.
During August 2025, as artist in residence at Casa Snowapple, I worked on a series of 35 mm photographs of the Río Magdalena, the last river in Mexico City.
The Wilderness Residency organized by Casa Snowapple, in which six artists took part, revolved around the topic of nature.
The state of the Río Magdalena has always been something that worries me. Throughout the years, I’ve submitted reports, signed and organized neighbor petitions, and frequently talked about it.
For my residency at Casa Snowapple, I proposed a series of photos that explore the river from the angle of its water’s composition. How does each section differ? How has the trash affected the river‘s water?
The resulting series is made up of four parts: the river’s start; the river flowing; the underground river; and the stagnant river. The river’s path is alluded to in the way that the framed photos were mounted on the wall: the river flowing downhill, underground, and its stagnant end.
Each section of the river has its own film roll; each film roll was soaked in a film soup made of river water from that specific section, as well as earth and/or debris found in situ.

The river sections that are en plein air are shot in color, while the underground section is black and white.
Before starting the photo route, I did research on the river: its current and historic role in Mexico City; its presence in art; its importance for the ecosystem; its appearances on the news and politics; the plans -ignored- for its integral restoration.

The last Saturday of August, a collective exhibition was held at Casa Snowapple to show each artist’s process and results during the residency.
